Persbericht: “Nieuwe speciale gezant godsdienstvrijheid, begin in Turkije”

To:     Mr. Margaritis Schinas

Vice-president of the European Commission

Commissioner for Promoting the European Way of Life

Dear Mr. Schinas,

As Co-Chairs of the European Parliament Intergroup on Freedom of Religion or Belief and Religious Tolerance (FoRB & RT) we, along with our members, congratulate you on renewing the mandate of the Special Envoy for the promotion of freedom of religion or belief outside the EU. It is important to keep freedom of religion or belief on the political agenda of the European Union. By renewing the mandate you have made a clear and strong statement that FoRB is a fundamental right and essential part of the European values.

We hope the Special Envoy can start as soon as possible. We are looking forward to meet the Special Envoy to discuss our mutual efforts. There is a lot of work waiting! For instance, we are most concerned about the situation in Turkey. The Erdogan-government is deporting Christians and stopping them on entering the country. And this government has far-reaching plans to change the Hagia Sophia from museum into a mosque again. This rightly provokes much indignation since the Hagia Sophia has more history as a church than as a mosque.

The Intergroup is looking forward to a good cooperation with the new Special Envoy. We thank you for your time and attention to this important matter.

Yours Sincerely,

Co-chairs of the EP Intergroup Freedom of Religion or Belief & Religious Tolerance

MEP Peter van Dalen (EPP) + MEP Carlo Fidanza (ECR)
